Gelato in Minnesota? Ya Betcha!

    Minnesota is a dairy state and we all know the best places to get a scoop or a sundae. But gelato, gelatoyou have to go to Italy, don't you? Minneapolitans are getting acquainted with the chilly treat, thanks to three enterprising brothers - Tim, Todd and Mike Pellezzer.  They opened two Italian scoop shops in Minneapolis named Sebastian Joe's in honor of their grandfather who practiced the art form in the Old Country.

    There are many new flavors that Grandpa Joe never tried : banana yogurt, grapefruit-Campari sorbet and the favorite of most,  Pavarotti.  The Pavarotti mixes gourmet ice cream, carmel, banana and chocolate chips.  Now that is enough to make anyone sing!

     Take your choice of two locations;

    1007 Franklin Avenue West or

    4321 Upton Avenue South

Kathleen can you send me a scoop of that Pavarotti?  It sounds absolutely wonderful.  It was a very warm day here in Calgary and that gelato would hit the spot.  Betty

<sigh> From this Jersey girl of a certain age, <sweat> <sigh> <explode> <breathe> <start again>  that grapefruit and campari thing sounds divine!!  Did I tell you our fridge has been broken for the last 6 weeks and that the part we need is on back order until October 1?!  The suffering!!

Kathleen, shouldn't that be "ja, yoo betcha?" :-)  I don't think I've ever tried gelato, but it sounds interesting.  I know we have places that sell that here in hot, steamy, soon to be hit by hurricane Fay, Florida.  BTW, how are the horsies doing this summer?

Terry - it should be I guess - I don't speak the native language well.

Allison is now back in Fort Myers - just in time for the hurricane.

Horsies are good and holding at 11.  I get calls all the time from people who want to sell or give away theirs because they can't afford to keep them. I do try to find them homes but no longer take them in  -  but I would like to!!!!!

Yeah Kathleen, the economy is really hurting the horses.  I heard that out west they are turning their horses loose in the wild, assuming they can fend for themselves.  NOT!  Wish I had several hundred acres, I'd take as many as I could.

Kathleen, I have heard so much about this and have yet to try any.

Kathleen, I got to thinkin about the gelato and checked out some at the grocery store today, OMG it contains gelatin!  Does yours?  Knowing that one source of gelatin is horse hooves, there is no way I'd eat that stuff.  Well I"m a vegetarian so I wouldn't eat it anyway.

Terry - here is the SCOOP:Some people have the misconception that the word "gelato" is related to "gelatin" and that the latter is an ingredient, chasing away vegetarians and those wishing to avoid gelatin. However, although some rogue gelaterias might use gelatin, traditional gelato recipes do not call for it and most gelato is not made with gelatin. "Gelato", as stated above, comes from the word for "freeze" or "frozen".
