Post Your Favorite Comfort Foods

walleye pike    I saw a poll that was being conducted for America's favorite foods and thought it would be fun to see how Active Rain members and readers rate their favorites. Food is often closely associated with memories and something may stand out because you ate it on your first date or your Grandmother always served it for Christmas. If you could list the food and then an explanation, (if there is one) then  it will probably be easier to understand your choice.

Since it is my idea - I will start:

Potatoes and gravy - why? I just like it

lutefisk and lefsa - just kidding

corn on the cob - the super sweet kind - ate this all summer, every summer

watermelon with a sprinkling of salt- craved it when pregnant and could win any seed spitting contest

avocado sliced on Saltine crackers

banana split from Coldstone  - Hot fudge on the vanilla, pineapple on the chocolate and strawberry on the strawberry ice cream - why?  Try one, you'll see!!!!!!!!!!

I know it isn't good for me, but a nice juicy hamburger! I don't know what it is but, I can just forget about life with a good burger in my hand! (Smoked is the best)

I'll be watching this to see what others have as their comfort foods.

Absolutely mashed potatoes and gravy.  That's always my first thought when I am looking for comfort in the way of food!  lol  And soup.  Soup is very comforting.

Oatmeal!  I love cinnamon & raisins in my oatmeal.  And Cream of Wheat.  When I'm sick (or I've had too much to drink the previous night), this is what I make myself.  Good for you, too!

Also, Zachary's Pizza.  For those that don't live in the Bay Area, you are missing out!  If you ever come to visit, look them up here

Todd - when you have got your hands wrapped around a good juicy (greasy , maybe) hamburger - you know you have got something.

We have a little place here in Brainerd called The Barn & they make the best burgers and Maid Rites (also homemade pie).

Hey Beth - why not just dive right in?

I need to send you an update email soon.

Posted by Kathleen Lordbock Keller Williams Realty Brainerd Lakes ( KW REALTOR/Staging & Short Sale Specialist) over 2 years ago

Chris - I love making soups so easy and I make lots and freeze the rest. Last week was chicken with  fluffy dumplings.

WE did eat a few other things during the week LOL

Aloha Lachelle,  I though you would come up with mango sorbet or coconut milkshake.

I have not been in San Francisco for quite  a few years but I am sure someone else will now be trying  Zachary's Pizza.

Posted by Kathleen Lordbock Keller Williams Realty Brainerd Lakes ( KW REALTOR/Staging & Short Sale Specialist) over 2 years ago

Actually, my Grandma used to make this pineapple cream cheese pie that I've made one variation of and THAT is so yummy.  And Trader Joe's carries this coconut sorbet that is TO DIE FOR!  So, I guess that satisfies the Hawaiian in me, right?  LOL

Aloha,

Lachelle

Hard to narrow down to just a couple, but right now it would be:

Warm apple pie with Vanilla Ice Cream

Cup of Tea with buttered toast

Baked Potato with butter and melted cheese (lots of it).

Last, but not least  Pizza and Bagels from NJ

Lachelle - We have 2 recipe groups on AR, if you want to share your pineapple cream cheese pie or if you can twist Trader Joe's arm for the sorbet recipe.
Posted by Kathleen Lordbock Keller Williams Realty Brainerd Lakes ( KW REALTOR/Staging & Short Sale Specialist) over 2 years ago

Dana - We used to have a little truck stop in Baxter, MN that served homemade apple pie with cinnamon ice cream and a slice of cheese on top if you wanted.

Tea and toast sounds comforting and a bit European but then that would be a scone instead of toast maybe.

I do like a toasted bagel with cream cheese.

Thanks, Kathleen, for informing me on the recipe groups!  I found them and will be posting stuff soon.

Aloha, Lachelle

Kathleen- I have heard of a slice of cheese on apple pie. I must admit that I have never been able to bring myself to try it, maybe the time has come.  I am off to find the AR recipe groups.
Posted by Dana Forster Realtor, A Home 4Sale Inc, Va (AHome4Sale) over 2 years ago

Lachelle - there are so many groups on AR, some times you just need a guide to get around.

I will be waiting for your recipes to show up.

Dana, I will be looking for some yummy recipes from your home to ours.

Kathleen - I'm a little behind in the realm of the coffee clutch, but since it is my off weeek from SIF, I thought I would stop by and catch up!  I love these 'trivial information' posts that help us get to know each other better.  Here's mine, they change with the season - weird, I know!

Winter - soup or pancakes

Spring - Cookies

Summer - Ice cream - usually something chocolate

Fall - anything with pumpkin or apples, warm of course!

And the universal chocolate!

Posted by Kimberly Wester over 2 years ago

Kimberly - If you are what you eat -  then, you have a seasonal personality disorder.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh, chocolate - you are normal.

i love chicken & dumplings on a cold wintery day...

'super sweet' sweet corn...i remember eating corn when i lost my front teeth...

grandma's lemon merangue pie...

Posted by Jane Stevens over 2 years ago

Hello Jane -

How does one eat corn without their front teeth?

My grandparents both had dentures (which they didn't wear) and corn time was pretty interesting to us kids!!!!

I eat lemon pie at the Barn Restaurant & banana creme & rhubarb.......

Hi Kathleen. I know it's not good for me and my wife hates it when I ask her to make it... but potato wedges with melted mozzarella cheese and drenched in gravy would definitely classify as my comfort food.
Posted by Vicente A. Martinez Realtor Brooklyn | Long Island | Queens Homes (Prudential Douglas Elliman Licensed Real Estate Salesperson) over 2 years ago

Hi Kathleen,

Here you go talking about food again....mashed potoatoes with gravy is a good one, love pizza & chocolate. I have never heard of putting salt on watermelon...LOL! ;)

Posted by Somerset MA Real Estate ~ Suzanne Sands (Pavao Real Estate) over 2 years ago
Whoa!!!! Vincent, that is a lot of comfort - never tried it (sounds good)
Posted by Kathleen Lordbock Keller Williams Realty Brainerd Lakes ( KW REALTOR/Staging & Short Sale Specialist) over 2 years ago

Suzanne I am shocked girl - Suzanne and Mashed potatoes and gravy in the same sentence.  And then - what??? Pizza??? Chocolate is classified officially as medicine now, so that is OK.

The salt bring out the taste in the watermelon -really.

Posted by Kathleen Lordbock Keller Williams Realty Brainerd Lakes ( KW REALTOR/Staging & Short Sale Specialist) over 2 years ago

Potatoes -- any way! Mashed, baked, "soupy", fried...

And, grilled cheese (plenty of butter!) and hot tomato soup...

And, banana pudding (homemade with lots of Nilla Wafers!)...

oatmeal raisin cookies, like my Memaw made...

potato soup, my mom's recipe!

OK, now I've got to go find a snack, thanks a lot!!

Posted by Dawn Grasty - Durham NC Real Estate (Prudential Carolinas Realty) over 2 years ago

Dawn - glad I help you with your diet plan - any time, just ask!!!

My Dad was the one who made the potato soup at our house - yummy, but I don't have his recipe.

We used to have grilled cheese and tomato soup as well, now why do they just seem to go together?

Anything that I don't have to cook.

Kristina - It is comforting to just "be served" isn't it.
Posted by Kathleen Lordbock Keller Williams Realty Brainerd Lakes ( KW REALTOR/Staging & Short Sale Specialist) over 2 years ago

HAMBURGER HELPER AND RAW CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE DOUGH!

Although not together...that doesn't "make a great meal," LOL

All the best,

Audrey

Posted by Audrey Hoffman, VoteAudrey (VoteAudrey blog) over 2 years ago
Audrey - I assumed that you cooked the Hamburger Helper with hamburger and stuff but then I saw that you ate the dough raw - now I'm not so sure.!!!!

A Cheeseburger, fried & chocolate shake from In-N-Out Burger!

Mashed Potatoes & Gravy w/a biscuit from KFC

I am also a huge fan of an easy Grilled Chicken, Steamed Broccoli & Rice dinner!

Posted by Sandra Carlisle, DRE# 01364315 (First Team Estates) over 2 years ago

Sandra - I have never been to an In-N-Out burger - sounds fun.

I like hot fudge concrete shakes from Culvers.

The later meal sounds very healthy.

OMG Sandra, I am a native southern California boy, I have not thought about In-N-Out Burgers for many years.  I always loved to buy the newest T-shirts.

Kathleen:  Okay, I cranked up the crock pot an made beef stew this weekend.  On a chilly winter day, it doesn't last long around the house.  The good news is there is plenty of time left before swimsuit season!
Posted by Kristina, KFM Staging & Design - A Minnesota Home Staging Company (KFM Staging & Design) over 2 years ago
Kristina - You are not supposed to eat the whole pot in one sitting or would that be staging? I haven't made stew for a while - good idea.

Lutefisk and Lefse - wow I live in NY but grew up in WI - I bet alot of people read than and went "huh", what's that.  I hated the raw fish but loved the lefse, we'd buttered and sugar it.  My Mom sends about 20 frozen packages of it to me and my brother in CA every Christmas!!

Note:  do not read this post when hungry - it's like going to the grocery store hungry!!!  I'd answer but I got to go - the kitchen is calling me......................

Becky

PS  even the spell checker doesn't know what Lutefisk and Lefse is?!  HUH!

Posted by Becca Briggs (The Decorated House ) over 2 years ago
Becky (& Nicole) - an educated eater - but you are actually supposed to cook the lutefisk before eating (doesn't help much tho). Have fun in the kitchen.
Posted by Kathleen Lordbock Keller Williams Realty Brainerd Lakes ( KW REALTOR/Staging & Short Sale Specialist) over 2 years ago

oh was it cooked - it looked like a bowl of raw fish to me,  that was over 30 yrs ago that I left WI - I just remember the awkful smell like it was yesterday!!

Chocalate malts in the summer, yum
