Life Lessons ~ Part 4

Why do people attempt to climb dangerous mountains?  Why do people try to break the records in the Guinness Book of World Records? Why do people try so hard to do what no one else or so few have been able to do? They like the challenge.  They think they can and often they do, go -  where no one has gone before.

"My mother told me to believe that the only obstacles you're going to have are the ones that you fabricate for yourself....If you don't know how to do something or if something scares you or looks impossible, you're going to work a lot harder.  Whether you have succeeded or failed, there's more gratification in trying something that you haven't done and didn't know how to do."

~Anne Sweeney, co-chair of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney-ABC Television

I know that when I challenge myself on any level I get such satisfaction upon the accomplishment of that goal.  Even if it is something small, the positive feedback you get is such a rush. :-)  Just do it!

Kathleen - liking the challenge sums it up for me.  Being encouraged when I was very young by my Mom probably is what developed a life long love of a pursuit of the challenge.

Hi Kathleen:  What great words of encouragement.  It appears Ms Sweeney's mother really instilled in her daughter Anne a hunger for taking on great challenges.  Thanks for sharing...

Argue for your limitations, and soon enough... they'll be yours!

Hi Kathleen - this is a complicated issue for me. I have taken on many challenges which have brought me through many many things to where I am today. I have also driven myself so hard as to become ill. So I have had to also learn my limitations and boundaries and stay within them.

My second son (wonder where he gets it from) is an extremist with sport - has seriously injured himself skiing and mountain biking - broke his foot right off with that one. He has slowed down a bit, but still dreams of wild adventure - wants to climb  Mount Robson, a rugged peak here in the Rockies with a friend - it is only recommended with guides.

Part of me says yes, another is really afraid!

I love challenges too. I have recently also decided not to swim upstream if I am going to end up in the same place. i guess you could say I choose my challenges differently now. Like our current market for example: There will be agents who thrive in it, I choose to be one of them, that is my challenge.

Kathleen, I like to challenge myself too but I take the path of "caution" when I do.  I have to test the waters and see where they may lead me before I head off in a certain direction.  Sometimes that works well and other times it leaves me at the end of the pack. I will tell you though, everyday at yoga class I have to challenge myself :-) Cause yoga ain't for weenies!

Good one Jennifer - I assume you are doing a blog on that - after you are done swimming in the kiddy pool, that is!!!

Deborah - There are challenges and then there is wisdom - the two need to mix and that in itself is a challenge.   Hmmmm - I do wonder where he got it from?  I was in therapy 6 months to be able to walk properly again some years back - crushed under  a fallen horse.

Christina - You just need to adjust your game a bit as the old ways in selling real estate aren't working.  Those who rise to this challenge will rise to the top - go for it.

Terry - One does not need to throw all caution to the wind -  a good workable game plan is prudent and very advisable  but sadly some people never even manage to  "test the waters".  You are a home stager - that was a risk right there.

Hugh - Would this also be part of the "patience is a virtue"?  Instant gratification has become a big problem in the US in all areas of life. Instant high, instant whatever you can't afford to buy......

Life lessons can be so painful sometimes - ouch.

Kathleen, Even though there are times I look at the grass on the other side of the fence and wonder, I've realized that watering can be an excellent challenge. Thank you for reminding me of how much I do enjoy the challenge!

Yvonne - Exactly what were you wondering when you looked at the grass?

Without a challenge we would dry up.  Of course, some days getting out of bed can be challenge enough.

We do this because it is there and we do it to challenge ourselves and we do it simply because we are human.
