Life Lessons ~ Part 1

Jumping fish

At times, we will have periods in which we doubt as to whether the career path we have chosen is an appropriate fit for us. In fact, on the average, you can expect to have between three and five career changes during your lifetime, and up to six job changes within a career.  Whether you are a Home Stager, Realtor, or loan broker these bits of advice from others in this series, may tell you something that you have been needing to hear - right now.

"Inevitably, if you aim high enough, you will be buffeted by demands of family, friends and employment that will conspire to distract you....You will find your strongest beliefs ridiculed and challenged; principles that you cherish may be derisively dismissed by those claiming to be more practical  or realistic than you.  But no matter how weary you may become in persuading others to see the value in what you value, have courage still - and persevere."

 ~ Madeline Albright, 64th U.S Secretary of State ~

Marvelous timely and insightful words for my morning Kathleen. These feel like a lovely soothing balm.

I have had several career changes and am in the midst of establishing another one - still in the process of following my bliss, while others around me are retiring, having already made their way.

Thanks - great post - I love the image - reminds me of how our Pacific salmon leap upstream.

Career change is great so long as it is motivated by a desire to improve and not by a desire to escape.

Nice post, and love the pic.  Five career changes sounds like quite a few...I think I'll be in real estate a good long while!

Rosario-Yes, the escape clause only lasts so long - change can move one ahead.

Jennifer - You don't have to ever change - just most people move around a bit.  If you love it and it works for you , why change jobs?

Terry - Apparently some of us get older and wiser. I include you in that.

Thank you Kathleen.  Yeah sometimes wiser and sometimes not so wiser.  It all depends on how we apply those life's lessons :-)

Kathleen ~ What a great quote! I think I need to put that one up on the bulletin board over my desk.  It can be so hard sometimes, add all the above in, plus a "day job" and sometimes you wonder about what you are trying to accomplish with a business.

Kathy - There are more quotes coming - just trying to get a good start on a  crazy time of year for my company.  We do seasonal decorating and are staging (theater style) a children's musical for a church and some commercial decorating.  The quotes are for me to remember as well.

Kathleen, I found the quote to be distressing. Loved ones around us should be supporting us instead of ridiculing and challenging our principles. Could Madeline Albright have made this statement about her own family? Co-workers? Probably. It's unfortunate but true that a woman that holds the position she did would be under attack. Please forgive me for this response but I felt compelled to tell it like it is. IF she felt that way it is very sad. It just means that although she was giving her best, others around her didn't want her to have the best. Maybe it was jealousy or fear or contempt for her success. If I have misunderstood then I apologize but this quote made me want to respond with a huge defense for her! Her quote does show that she kept her chin up and persevered and did the best she could. God bless her and all the people who believe! Deb

Hi Kathleen -- Encouraging post to be sure.  Madeline Albright was a feisty lady indeed, and stood tall despite her actual height, for America.  In fact, in an interview with Elisabeth Eaves, she spoke of the American Dream, which aptly applies to our profession: "The American Dream means being part of a society that allows you to be or do whatever you want, and to have a sense that your individual optimism and hard work will be rewarded."  Sign me up!

Kathleen, wonderful post.  There have been many times over the past year and a half when Margo and I didn't always receive the support we needed - but just like the little fish we have persevered and things seem to be moving along 'swimmingly' (couldn't resist).  We find now that we tend to encourage our friends and relatives more in their new endeavors then we did before.  Thanks for the post.  Betty

Debra - I am sure that she had a lot of opposition along the way - generally goes with that kind of a high profile job, but still is hard to take.

Terry - Sign me up too - I don't mind the hard work - I work with purpose.

Thanks for that quote - I hope everyone catches it.

Betty - I am sure that you and Margo are great encouragers- we all neeed that no matter what careers we chose, but in those areas where staging is not the norm - we need it even more.
