Minnesota Home Stager Tip- How to Get Wax Off a Carpet

candles   photo by FABIOLA MEDEIROS'

You have just had the perfect evening with friends over and happy conversations by glowing candlelight. Your guests have departed and you are cleaning up before retiring. The dishes - into the kitchen, the candles -ooops a wax spill on your lovely new carpet.  What to do , what to do????

Take a brown paper bag - either a lunch bag or a piece of a grocery bag that's big enough to cover the wax. Place the paper bag over the melted wax and use a hot iron (steam off) to rub over the paper bag. The wax will come off automatically and be absorbed into the bag. This method is A LOT easier than the ice cube way.

We do event planning and have had many spills by nervous wedding participants on church carpets. The brown bags and iron are packed and ready. We use an old iron for this and a separate one for clothing touch-ups.

Many stagers use  candles for open houses - others never.  But, you probably burn them at home - so this tip may come in handy, eventually.

Great tip Kathleen!  I had always used the ice cube method and it gets messy and still can be a challenge to remove the wax from carpet.  I guess the ice cube trick will stay with the gum removal tip bin!!  : )  Great post KL!!  Regards-Kathleen G

you can also use wax paper in the same manner but now I can't remember which side you put next to the wax.... didn't know a plain old brown bag would work just as well!

Kathleen Garvey -- Enhanced Interiors & Home Staging, FL- We used to try the removal with ice cubes but it took too long and was not that great.

I'm sure you will remember and you should have a tip file going soon - put them on recipe cards and file like recipes - this could be wax removal or whatever you would remember it by.

Kathleen, I saw this on the BBC show where the two women go into all those disgusting homes and help them clean up.  It works!  Glad you shared it here!  Horsies OK?

This is very effective Kathleen - I've used it with paper towel - just keep blotting until all the wax is absorbed - had a couple of occasions to do it.

I used a paper towel too. Worked to remove red wax!

Deborah - A good heavy paper towel would be effective and maybe easier that the bag.

No lite candles for me in staged or unstaged homes.  But at home, another story.  I had forgotten this until you revived it for me.

I've used this method with table cloths as well... but with newspaper. I've never had an issue with ink transfer.

It really is a quick and easy way to remove wax from any fabric - carpets to table cloths!

I just learned that when shooting photography of a staged room, you can use coke in a wine glass in place of actual wine. It looks just like wine in the photos and I don't have to waste a bottle for the shot. Oh, the tricks of the trade!
