How To Wrap An Extension Cord Properly

How to Wrap An Extension Cord Video

Whether you are a home stager, make bird houses in your garage or really like to light things up for Christmas - you probably own an extension cord and need to watch this video.  I have been wrapping extension cords up for years and I have been doing it the wrong way!  The result of that ignorance ( and some general misuse, theft, wear and tear)  has resulted in my  having to buy many new cords every year.

Since I am also the partner in Quality Roof Systems located in Brainerd, Minnesota  , we have very long (translate into expensive) cords.  No matter how long your cord nor what you use it for, it pays to wrap them correctly and get more cost effective use out of them. This  instructional video is quick and can save us all a good deal of money and frustration in the long run.

Here I broughtpopcorn gif the popcorn!

Welcome from the Brainerd Lakes - where outdoor and indoor recreational opportunites abound. Looking to buy on one of our many lakes? Ready to move up or down?  Having trouble selling your home? Falling behind on payments or already in the foreclosure process? I am a Certified Short Sale Specialist as well as a Home Staging Expert.

I have always been taught the figure 8 for wrapping any cords so you do not strech them and then you have less of guage than what you started with.

Good girl Susan - I wrapped them around - hand to elbow - just like I do my water hoses - got to change that , too - but not to a figure 8.

Doggone it I can't get the video to play. I tried reading the transcript. No use. I don't have any idea what flipping the hand back and forth does because I don't know what is happening with the cord. So . . . how do I get the video to play?

Jason - You know better now. as do I.

Yvonne-

I don't know why it won't play for you so I emailed you the link.

Let me know if you can't hear it that way.

Anyone else having trouble with the video?

Thanks Kathleen, I finally got it to work. Now I will have to practice because I have been doing it exactly like he says not to do. Funny part is that while I worked on the drama team at our church the way we wrapped all the miles of cords was what he is saying to do. I just never transfered the information. Perhaps I will be able to do it correctly. Good info. Thanks!

Wait.  You mean balling them up and throwing them in a box with many other cords isn't the way it is suppose to be done...? Weird.  Thanks for the instructions.

Nice try Stephen - but that is even worse that my neatly wrapping them around my arm. I suppose you do that with your Twinkle lights, too!!!! I know they decorate in Colorado in the winter.

Yep I go with the traditional figure 8 and then have a fit when it is time to unwrap. Old creatures of habit I just guess.

Thanks for the video.  I am going to have so much fun with this.  Wondering If I can get a dinner out for the one that can wrap the cord properly?  Wicked, aren't I?  My poor husband and my practical jokes.

Thank you for the great tip. Who would believe that my cords have suffered abuse at my hands.

Jackie - So it is the old I know something you don't know game - right?

You had better practice a bit  to become the cord wrapping pro - was it over under & under over?

Dionne - I think there is probably a group forming on AR for former extension cord abusers - want to join?
