Is Copper-tone Back?

Has anyone seen the ads for the bronze appliances?  I  know Jenn-Air  ( click for  photos) has them out already.  They look like an up-graded version of the old Copper-tone without the shade variations that went  darker to the edges.   I'm sure that they are really very good looking up close.

My parents had a Copper-tone kitchen and laundry room.  My Mother thought it was very chic.  Each manufacturer had a slight variation on the color, however and my parents appliances were all different brands.

My sister had the Avocado appliances and then in her next home, went to Red appliances.  I really liked those and never saw them anywhere else.

We have a house trailer that we lived in after our tornado, while our house was being rebuilt.  It has perfectly functioning Harvest Gold appliances.  At the time, I was just happy to have a little "home" to live in and appliances that worked. I think that I will keep them for a while, I am rather fond of them now. I use the trailer for storage for my staging props.

They say that there really isn't anything new under the sun, so someday (and maybe, already) all these colors will be back. Aren't you excited about that?

Ooooo - I haven't seen any of these yet, but it sounds awesome!!  I'm heartily sick of the stainless steel - I think copper would be so much warmer and imagine all the copper pots and accessories we could all pull out again and get some mileage out of once more.

Brilliant spotting on "trends" Kathleen!  Love to feel in the know on a new trend.

The Jenn-Air link above goes to a slide show of the oiled bronze appliances

Juliet - I do like the warm colors, especially with our cold Minnesota winters.

Kathleen, I dont think I'd like that in my kitchen.  Too dark, and it reminds me too much of the late 60's early 70's version which I thought looked crappy.  NOW, give me the fridge in your picture, I'll take that baby any day!  In fact, when I bought my grandmothers house years ago, it was a very dated 50's kitchen with a new fridge.  In keeping with the theme, I wallpapered the fridge in turquoise and white.  Yes, you can wall paper appliances.  It looked awesome!

I think in a lighter kitchen with light granite they would look pretty cool.  I heard that kitchens were going with white appliances for next year... was I dreaming?

Terry - I put the blue fridge in because I love it - glad you do too.

Lori Kim - I hope you are right, mine are white . I had several clients put in black in new builds  and I thought that was pretty much out, too.  The appliances were in before I was called. The last had dark cabinets, slate floors, black appliances, dark laminate counter tops (help).

Dang, We just put stainless in our new home. I would sooo much rather have the oil-rubbed color. It would look perfect in my kitchen! Oh well....Thanks for sharing! I hadn't seen that yet.

Kathleen, my appliances are all white and I love the clean, cool look.  But Terry, thanks for your idea - if the copper comes in, I'm off to the wallpaper store.  When was that tornado?  I've never even come close to experiencing one.  You all must have been pretty darned frightened.  Betty
Posted by Betty Haney (Haney Consulting) over 2 years ago

Betty, the tornado was about 75 miles NW of here.  When I lived in Nebraska the first summer I spent the entire time in the basement.  Seems every night were tornado warnings.  I'd rather have time to prepare for a hurricane than never know if a tornado was going to drop out of the sky.  After Kissimmee got hit about 10 years ago I bought a weather alert radio.  Ya just never know around here.

Kathleen, do you own that fridge or just find a picture of it?  I love it!  I can't believe white appliance are coming back, they look so boring and cheap compared to all the new stuff.  I have white but would prefer black.  I have a fake stainless fridge though.  Its neater looking than stainless because it has a glow, maybe similar to that new copper.

Betty -  We were hit by a tornado in June of 2001 - & have not recovered yet.  It completely took my entire boarding and training stable & we lost horses.  The house was heavily damaged and we are slowly rebuilding.  If you could just stop life for 6 years ,we might be done - but took care of my parents after the tornado and now they are both gone.

So I train and ride my own horses only and stage coach ( minus the coach).

Terry  - no have fridge, but would like fridge. I have a weather alert  radio and last week the siren went off about every 20 minutes through the night - no touch downs!  I was trying to figure out how to put 12 horses in our basement!

Kathleen - Thanks for the WARNING.  I like to always play it safe.  Stainless Steel is my fav.  Sometimes that isn't the best approach and I miss out.  I am just too picky and as my husband says "Don't buy it, you will hate it next week!" :)

Kathleen I am so sorry to hear about our losses in 01, especially the irreplaceable horses.  OMG that must have been so gut wrenching.  Here they tell horse owners not to evacuate their horses before a hurricane, just turn them out.  How stupid is that?  After Andrew they found horses impaled on telephone poles.  Thats one reason I don't have a horse here in FL.  Its hard enough to evacuate with dogs and cats.  But in 05 right before Frances, the turnpike was full of people pulling horse trailers.  Bless them for doing that, a lot just left the horses to fend for themselves.  Say, did you see that HGTV show about funky houses where the guy had his stable underground?  It was awesome.  The horses were cool in the summer, warm in the winter and he never has to worry about weather.

Kathleen,

LOVE the copper !!

I've been telling my clients for years to get colored frigs.  I have a cobalt blue cover for my Kitcheaid dishwasher.  I really wanted the Elvira frig for my Kitchen when we remodeled, but couldn't justify the $6,000.00 price tag and no bells or whistles (Rachael has one on her cooking show.) Viking has all different colors now too.

JJKitchen

You can also bring an old frig. to an Auto-Body shop and have it painted.  I did this w/my vintage Geneva Cabinets for my laundry room.

Julea's Laundry Room

There is also company that will "Skin" your out-of-date frig - http://www.kitchensource.com/kau/frigofridge.htm

Wow Julea...I never thought of that...great idea, and LOVE your pictures!  It seems that they should create "mood" appliances where you can snap covers on the front depending on your decorating mood. But then again, isn't create demand for something new how the mfr's make money?
Posted by Susan Smith (Rooms That Work LLC) over 2 years ago
Julea, how cool.  I too had a fridge painted at a body shop.  It lasted many years before I bought a new one.  I need to check out that website.  Are those cabinets done in a stainless paint finish?  Is that a Wilsonart laminate countertop?

I love Jenn-Air, they seem to always be ahead of the other appliance manufacturers.

I can't stop touching their floating glass refridgerator in black...it has got to be the sexiest thing I've ever seen in appliances!

Thanks for the link. I didn't know they'd come out with the copper line. I love it!

We started with "white."  Upgraded to coppertone... to avacado... to harvest gold... to almond.  Now we're at industrial-look stainless.  Kinda like that.  Think we'll stay there awhile.  You guys are wayyyyy too trendy, or I'm wayyyyyy too old.  Reckon it's the later!

Bill - If you see some of the above responses they think we are going back to white - you are still behind.

I hope you saved yours!!!  We can't even keep up with the trends, we just report them.

Julea - I am redoing an entire home this winter and it has 50's white enamel "Premium"metal cabinets in the kitchen.  We are pulling them out and re-configuring that space.  But I want to keep them and get them painted. They are really well made, but shhhhhh I have no need for them. Maybe I could fit them in the garage!

Susie - Stainless is very nice - be happy - besides with the right filter couldn't you photograph them as copper?

Kathleen-

You're killing me - I wanted to mix the metal cabinets into my new kitchen, and shopped E-Bay looking for them, but they were all in yucky condition - ended up w/all maple shaker instead.

They're built like IRON, repaint them in some WILD color and use them for storage.

Posted by Julea Joseph, Interior Stylist (Reinventing Space) over 2 years ago

Kathleen, I would kill to have those metal cabinets of yours.  My grandmother, the same one with the kitchen where I wallpapered the fridge, had hers painted at a body shop.  They turned out great.  Maybe you could ship them to me? :-)

Julea, I too have Wilsonart in my kitchen.  Can't remember the name but it looks like granite.  I opted for that because of price and because granite is mined which is not very environmentally friendly.

Kathleen, you are one strong lady.  Losing your horses, home, and later your parents ... and yet here you are helping all of us with advice, posting your interesting articles and pictures and just generally being such a kind supportive person.  We are lucky to have you on AR.  Betty

Terry,

The Wilsonart is in my laundry room, I've got Corian in my kitchen - I wanted that seamless sink, plus granite didn't seem "in-tune" to my 1948 Ranch.

I took a look at the Jenn-air copper toned appliances and have to say I like them. But it is all so cyclical our kids will be looking at catalogs from the early 2000's and laughing at us too.
Posted by Todd & Danielle Millar (Glenn Simon Inc.) over 2 years ago
Todd and Danielle - There just is no hope for that is there. I am just now starting to appreciate the retros 50's stuff and liking it much better, that when I was living with it growing up.
