      Do you think that a $115 ticket for not wearing your seatbelt is unfair?  Have you compared that with the price of intensive medical care for treatment of an unbelted person who had been thrown from a vehicle?  75% of those ejected from a vehicle are seriously injured or killed.   Brainerd Lakes Area law enforcement officers will be participating in the Statewide Mn Safe and Sober program  and the Child Passenger Safety, and Night Patrol.

     Seat belts are to be worn by all vehicle occupants anytime that vehicle is moving.  If buckled, your chance of surviving a crash is more that 50%.  For those properly buckled up and riding in an SUV or a pickup truck the survival rate goes to more that 60%.

     The law enforcement liaison for Northern Minnesota with the MN Safe and Sober program is Tom Kummrow.  He quotes that 84% of Minnesotans on the average use their seat belts.  However, here in rural MN  among young men who drive pickup trucks that number drops to 20%. 

     "That's horrible," said Kummrow.  "Thats where we are killing our people."

     To give more statistical evidence - in 2005 there were 440 people killed in car accidents in MN.  225 of those were not wearing seat belts.  And of those 225 people who were not belted, 1/4 were ejected or partially ejected from the vehicle. 

      For Minnesota, our leading cause of death and injury to people age 4-33 years is traffic crashes.  Nationally, traffic fatalities account for more children's deaths that all childhood diseases combined.  Tom Kummrow should know about how expensive and emotionally devastating a crash can be for someone who is unbelted.  His son was not wearing one when he had a vehicle roll over.  After spending 6 weeks in a coma, the medical charges will run between $500,000 to $1 million.  His son has now recovered.

     Crow Wing County Sheriff, Todd Dahl, says that in his 20 law enforcement years there could  have been many lives saved if only they had been wearing a seat belt.

      "Your safety is our # 1 priority and buckling up is an important part of that,"  Dahl said.

     If you are a non seat belt wearing person, statistically it will take 2.4 tickets for not wearing a seat belt in order to change you into a seat belt wearer.

     Let us improve all the above statistics.  Bad choices cost us all.

28 year old, Jon Kenning, assistant professor at Creighton University in Nebraska, was attacked by a bear while sleeping in a tent.  The attack took place in Itasca State Park in Northwestern Minnesota.

Kenning was on a 2 day Biology  field course leading a group of 10 students.  The attack occurred around 2 AM and was over very quickly.  Kenning received about six cuts on his face about 2 inches long. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he received stitches.

Kenning said "Oh, yeah, I'll be back.".  "Obviously I was in pain." said Kenning, who describes himself as one experienced in camping. "I was pretty shaken up, but I don't think I'll have nightmares about it."

Senior Park Administrator Courtland Nelson says that in his 21 years with the DNR he has never had an incident where a camper was attacked by an animal.  "This is an oddity." 

  Two area highways will experience traffic slow downs as they are slated for surface coatings.

•      Highway 6 from the Mississippi River to South of Emily in Crow Wing County (about 6 miles) and Highway      6 from Remer to Highway 2 in Cass and Itaska Counties (about 21 miles)

•      Highway 371 from Backus to Hackensack in Cass County (about 7 miles)

     A pilot car and flag personnel will be in charge of controlling the traffic.  Any motorists traveling through these areas should allow extra time during the day from sunrise to sunset. 

                                       Slow down and be alert for workers and equipment.

     If all goes as planned the work should be completed by the end of June.

     As we are now in the Memorial holiday weekend and tonight is our first public performance of our annual "Freedom Celebration" a  program honoring area servicemen and women and thanking God for our freedom and our country.  As we honor them for their sacrifice, we also point them to Jesus as the one sacrifice who gives us freedom from payment for our sins.

     "Freedom Celebration" in the past has brought in the old, the maimed, service families left behind, the newly enlisted young and brave and those who emotionally have never recovered from their battles. They will come to hear the music, get their gifts or for a time to socialize with others in their respective divisions.  We will love on them and honor them and tell them the truth about real freedom.  It won't be "in your face" and the spoken message will be the shortest part of the program.  But God will be there, every song, every skit will be permeated with his Spirit.  The "fallen soldier" ceremony can touch the hardest heart.  Pray with us that their eyes and ears and hearts will be open to receive Him as Lord and Savior.  Tomorrow we perform again at 2:00PM.

                Cass County needs more volunteers for their Faith in Action program.

The volunteers provide rides to medical appointments, help with grocery shopping, run errands, build ramps, visit and more.

 New volunteer orientations are scheduled from 9:30 AM - noon June 6th in Hackensack, June 22 in Longville and June 27th in Pine River.

Harvey Starks, 40, who was severely burned when he attempted to light his natural gas cooking stove has been upgraded to serious condition.

Harvey remains in the burn unit at Hennepin County Medical Center , where he was listed in critical condition on Monday and Tuesday.

Starks' home and a neighboring mobile home were destroyed by the explosion and the following fire.

A nearby mobile home was also extensively damaged along with a pickup truck.

The History Center, Pioneer Village and the historic depot on Main Street in Nisswa, MN is now open for the season.  

                                         Hours are 10AM - 4 PM.

 The summer schedule is May 26, June 2, and Wednesday through Saturdays there after through Labor Day weekend.

At the History Center you can view menus, photos, resort brochures and local artifacts.

Visitors to the Pioneer Village can get a  glimpse back in time at a turn of the  century town.
