Brainerd Lakes Real Estate News

Although the rain that we are getting this weekend will help, the fire danger will still remain at a high for our area.  Thus far we have experienced a number of wildfires and a total of 10-12 acres have burned. Brainerd DNR program forester Mark Mortensen reported that no structures were damaged at this point. Several fires were started last week by people who were burning even though there is a restriction presently in place.

Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty will be flying in to the Brainerd airport on Memorial Day  after ceremonies are held at Fort Snelling in St. Paul. He will be giving a short speech in Fort Snelling and then proceed on to the next event at the Nisswa American Legion.

The General Bruce Carlson will be the key speaker for the Nisswa event. Carlson was a 1967 graduate of the Brainerd High School and a member of its Hall of Fame as of 2001.  Presently he is serving as the commander  of Air Force Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. Joining him will be the former state Senator Don Samuelson , delivering a tribute to the veterans of all wars, and the present  Mayor of Nisswa, Brian Lehman who is to give a tribute to Nisswa veterans.

The Nisswa ceremony will begin at noon on May28th at the Nisswa American Legion.

Fast Cop Inc. is a hot program in the State of Minnesota and the excitement is mounting as they are coming to the Brainerd Lakes area on May 20th. The program is education in nature - teaching students the harsh reality of  drug  and alcohol use, aggressive driving behavior and the popular, illegal, and often times deadly sport of street racing. There have been a few Hollywood movies that helped to bring this sport back into vogue. Hundreds of drivers between the ages of 16-26 lose their lives in illegal street drag racing every year.  We have problems on the county road where we live and just a few years ago one driver didn't make the corner and was killed.

The Fast Cop Inc. program feels that one life lost in this manner is too many.  The program started in 2003 and has since reached more that 5000 young drivers.  This year in a partnership with the Crosslake-Ideal Lions Club and our quite famous Brainerd International Raceway , Fast Cop Inc. will be having their annual High School Shootout.  It will be open to drivers who are 16-19 years of age, enrolled in a Minnesota High School and have a street-legal vehicle to race.   If you want to race this is the time and place to do it. Nearly $4000.00 in prizes have been donated and the race will be held in a safe, controlled environment with the approval of the area police officers. What more could you ask for?

In the latest United States Census Bureau findings the city of Rochester came in first in growth with a whopping 9.8%.  Brainerd fell into 2nd place with  9.5% of growth from 2000 to 2006  out of what  the Bureau terms metro areas.  Areas such as the Twin Cities, areas around St. Cloud and into eastern Wisconsin continue to show growth.  These "metro" areas often included the surrounding communities for the purposes of this census.

Brainerd is now listed with a population of 90,045  residents compared to the 2000 recorded population count of 82,252 which is a change of 7, 793.

According to Brent Gunsbury in the Chamber Connection , our region was recently named a "micropolitan" and ranks as the 28th fastest growing  non-metro area in the U.S. We are growing at two times the statewide rate and by 2030 we will have 50.000 more people living in the Brainerd Lakes area.

As it is, our summer population swells to around 600,00 on weekends and much higher for the 4th of July

On a recent visit to the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley, Minnesota we came across this sign.

Remembering a previous experience I had with a female baboon involving a rock and a very good pitching arm (that would be the baboon's, but mine is not too bad either), I snapped a shot of this warning sign.

This also reminded of some people that I have worked with or at least tried to.

Baxter, MN 56425 

In Willmar, Minnesota  the body of Army Sargeant Joshua Schmit was flown in to the Willmar Municipal Airport by charter jet.  Members of the Minnesota Army National Guard , the retired Brigader General Dean Johnson and members of the Schmit family watched as Joshua's casket was unloaded. His father flew with the body from the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. Joshua Schmit ,26, was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq.

Hundreds of people lined up along the 19th Avenue in Willmar and waited for over an hour as the  body was carried to the Harvey Anderson Funeral home.  There were no boos, no hissing, no demonstrations against the war - only people, and United States  flags and tears.
